Historically, Labor Day is a holiday created by the 19th-century labor movement to acknowledge the contributions and achievements of the American workforce. On a more practical level, Labor Day always signifies the last hurrah before summer’s end (which technically doesn’t end until September 22.)

So as you trade in your short shorts and sunscreen for denim and layers, it’s no better time than the present to plan how you will spend the long weekend. 1. Plan a barbecue or picnic.
