Let’s just say it, things are weird right now. Social distancing has put all of us in a unique situation of getting way too comfortable in our pajamas, and running from one side of the house to the other is now considered fun. On top of that, were advised that it’s best to avoid seeing friends and family during this time, which has put us in a massive pull-of-the-heartstrings situation.

While we’re all adhering to the precautions set in place to keep us safe, we’re still in need of some socializing (talking to your pets does not count). Thankfully, video conferencing isn’t just for work meetings anymore! Check out how we’re feeding deep connections from a safe distance with those who matter most.

Have a game night with friends
Described as a “face-to-face” social network, The Houseparty app allows you and your friends to play games like trivia and Heads Up! while being able to see and hear each other’s guesses. You can also form video chat rooms for you and your friends to meet, catch up, and partake in a little playful, competitive banter.

Get together for a digital hangout
Video conferencing platforms like Zoom and Google Hangouts make it super easy for you to digitally connect with your friends and family from afar. Create a free account, download one of our fun backgrounds, and invite people to participate in virtual hangouts, whether you host book clubs, share podcasts, or host digital happy hours. The best thing about those? No one can tell you when you’ve had “too much” wine.

Ain’t no party like a Netflix party
There’s no doubt that most of the population has hopped onto Netflix for entertainment during this time. (How else is everyone supposed to understand the Tiger King memes?) That’s why the company released Netflix Party, a virtual hangout that makes viewing more social. Netflix Party works as a Google Chrome extension so you’ll need Chrome to join. After downloading the extension, you can sync show watching with your friends and talk all about them in the chat feature.

Check out dating apps
Joining a dating app at a time when people can’t meet up might seem counterintuitive. However, apps like Tinder and Hinge are a great way to have social interactions — even if you aren’t planning an immediate date. Hopping on a dating app not only helps with communication, but it can also get you excited for a date in the future if you do find someone you make a genuine connection with. Also, Tinder made their Passport feature free to all users so you can chat with people from all over the world.

FaceTime or call a friend
At a time like this, hearing someone’s voice on the other line can bring a world of comfort. Yes, we know phone calls bring a bout of anxiety like “who is going to hang up first?” and “how many times are we going to say ‘bye?'” However, the conversations don’t have to be long — but checking in on your family, best friend, or even your co-worker can help you feel connected to the important people in your life.

We hope you all are safe and healthy during this time, and getting by with a little help from your friends. What are some ways you’re socializing with loved ones? Let us know in the comments below!
