How to Pick the Right Skincare Product for Your Skin Type

Our skin is as unique as we are, with its own characteristics and needs. So, when it comes to skincare, you should not take a one-size-fits-all approach. One product could be a miracle worker for your best friend and wreak havoc when you try it out for yourself.

Identify your skin type and see our recommendations just for you.

1. Acne-Prone

Whiteheads, blackheads, cysts…Acne comes in all shapes and sizes, but its a (literal) pain to deal with no matter what form it takes. This skin type is already stressed out, so attacking it with too many products is the last thing it needs. Instead, try a simple, gentle routine that won’t irritate it further.

Product Recommendation:

Truly Clear Truly Gone Acne Patches
Perfect for when you can’t leave the pimple alone, these hydrocolloid patches seal blemishes and protect them from dirt and bacteria so your skin can heal faster.

2. Mature

As skin ages, it can become dry, dull, and uneven. You might also see fine lines, wrinkles, and dark spots show up as well. While there’s nothing wrong with aging (in fact, it should be celebrated!), there are steps you can take to help your mature skin glow. This is where a collagen-boosting moisturizer comes in.

Product Recommendation:
ELEMIS Pro-Collagen Night Cream
The ELEMIS night cream helps improve the appearance of skin’s suppleness, firmness, and elasticity thanks to ingredients like red algae, sesame, and avocado oil.

3. Dry

Dry skin lacks enough oil. It may look dull, feel tight, and even flake, peel, or crack (ouch!). What dry skin needs most is moisturizer, ideally one that helps improve the skin’s hydration over time.

Product Recommendation:
AHAVA Essential Day Moisturizer for Normal to Dry Skin
With a blend of Dead Sea minerals, this daily moisturizer is designed to increase and maintain the skin’s hydration while enhancing suppleness.

4. Combination

Combination skin displays characteristics of two or more skin types on different parts of the face. The most common is an oily T-zone (forehead, nose, and chin) with dryness on the cheeks. This skin type can be tricky to treat, so looking for products specifically designed for it is your best bet.

Product Recommendation:
AHAVA Essential Day Moisturizer for Combination Skin
This matte-finish moisturizer is designed to help keep skin hydrated while at the same time preventing unwanted oiliness.

5. Oily

Oily skin has a higher than average production of sebum, skin’s natural oil, which can make it look shiny and greasy. Oily skin is also prone to congestion in the form of blackheads, as well as breakouts. To help prevent excess oil while boosting moisture levels, try a mattifying hydrator.

Product Recommendation:
Dr. Brandt Pores no more® MATTIFYING HYDRATOR (keep an eye out for this product during FFF Week!)
This lightweight gel contains a smart sponge polysaccharide that’s able to distinguish between sebum and water, so it pulls oil from the skin while leaving hydration levels intact. It blurs your pores leaving you with a smooth, fresh finish.

6. Sensitive

Sensitive skin is extra reactive to stressors, which can include skincare products. While sensitivity varies from person to person, skin often appears red and can feel itchy and uncomfortable when it’s irritated. Sensitive skin needs mild ingredients and a less-is-more approach when it comes to skincare.

Product Recommendation:
MALIN+GOETZ Grapefruit Facial Cleanser
This 3-in-1 cleanser gently removes makeup, dirt, and oil while toning the skin without stripping it of its natural oils, making it especially suited to those with sensitive skin.
