As we cruise through the first month of the new year, we’re reminded that this can be a time for change, new beginnings, and resolutions.

We also like to use this month to look at the major players in our lives (family, friends, significant others, etc.) and the role that each one occupies. So, we decided to make a conscious effort in cultivating the relationships around us and embracing everyone.

From your childhood best friend to your work wife, here’s who we think you should embrace in 2017.

Your family member that you don’t see eye-to-eye with. Maybe you had a dispute last month over the holidays or your Facebook Timeline is filled with articles they share that you definitely don’t agree with — but having different views isn’t necessarily a bad thing. Yes, it can make gatherings awkward (trust us, we know). However, we’re choosing to not only accept these differences, but to also celebrate them. Try having a smart discussion about a topic that you would like to learn more about. You still might disagree, but making an effort to understand their perspective is everything.

Your work wife. Or your work husband. Work friends can truly be some of the best friends — because they’re the ones you spend 40+ hours with during the week. She knows when you’ve had a bad day, all of the drama surrounding your BFF’s wedding, and the real reason why you didn’t finish your report on time (you were watching The Bachelor). Cultivate this friendship like any other important relationship in your life and you will have a forever friend.

Your roommate. Speaking of people you spend a lot of time with…embracing your roommate is important. You share your living quarters with this person, which means you’re up close and personal. They might be your best friend, a random find from Craigslist, or your significant other; regardless, it’s important to give them the love and attention they deserve. Participate with them in their favorite activity or cook dinner together one night. Look at your own habits and behaviors and identify if any of these are detrimental to your friendship.

Your childhood best friend. She’s known you since you were in diapers, spent the awkward middle school years by your side, and tackled all of the pressure and excitement that high school brought. You might not talk a lot or see each other as often as you wish, but it’s people like these who are important to keep around. They’ve seen you at your best and your worst, yet they still want to be your friend. Plan a FaceTime or coffee date to catch up; we’re sure it’ll be sprinkled with hilarious and heartwarming memories.
