When it comes to hair, split ends are the bane of our existence.

This hair woe is inevitable, though — especially if you curl your hair every day or dyed your hair one too many times. While it’s crucial to trim your ends every two to three months, there are other simple ways you can maintain your hair’s health in between salon trips.

Here are our tried and true tips to keeping the split ends at bay:

Brush your hair before you hit the showers. Yes, it’s true…wet hair is more susceptible to breakage — which is why it’s important to brush your strands before you take a shower. If you must brush after a shower, we recommend using a brush like the Tangle Teezer. It’s the only brush we trust on wet hair, as it won’t pull or tug when getting the kinks out.

Use a microfiber hair wrap as your hair towel. Regular terrycloth towels are rough on the hair, and can cause breakage and frizz. We love using a microfiber turban instead because they’re soft and very gentle on the hair. This Aquis Luxe Hair Turban is great because it dries itself as it dries your hair, ultimately speeding up the drying process.

Lay off the hot tools. This tip may seem impossible to do, especially if your hair is more prone to frizz. Hair dryers and straighteners wreck havoc on your locks, causing your hair to dry out and break. If you must style your hair with hot tools, limit it to once a week, and make use of the style for days after.

Apply a leave-in conditioner. When you feel like your hair is dry enough, apply a leave-in conditioner to lock in moisture from your roots to ends. Leave-in conditioners are amazing because they hydrate, protect, and smooth out the hair, making your hair overall more healthy.

Mask weekly. We recommend using a hair mask at least once a week. Hair masks deeply penetrate the strands of your hair, and help heal and treat the hair. Apply a generous amount of a deep repair mask from roots to ends to replenish dry and brittle hair.

Treat daily. This last tip is probably the most important. Daily maintenance will really keep the split ends at bay. Using a hair oil like our holy grail Marrakesh Argan Hair Oil (featured in the FabFitFun Editor’s Box) will ultimately make your hair more durable and strong. The oil uses a blend of hemp seed oil, Argan oil, and witch craft to significantly improve the texture of your hair, giving you silky bouncy locks. Apply a pump to the ends of your hair every day, and you’ll grow luxurious and silky long locks before you know it!
