Eating three meals a day, taking a shower, brushing your teeth twice a day — these are all things we do without ever stopping to think about why we do them in the first place. Sure, the reasons are pretty obvious (hygiene, anyone?)…but the real question is how often should we be showering?

We all shower to cleanse our skin and reduce excess oils – however, showering too often can actually strip too much of your skin’s essential oils. The result? Very dry skin. Additionally, these oils have a protective factor against bacteria and showering too much can actually set yourself up for increased infections instead of preventing them. This is especially true if you take long, hot showers.

The verdict? At a minimum, you should shower about three times a week. This number goes up if you have a job that’s more physically exerting, or if you hit the gym on a regular basis. But shower any less than that, and you could be at risk for more skin infections, pimples, and all-around smelliness.

Additionally, if your hair type and scalp are especially dry, you probably don’t want to wash your hair as often as you shower. It may take some experimentation to figure out the right number of showers you need for your skin and hair type.

In the meantime, you can always practice washing key parts of your body known to be especially smelly, such as the armpits and groin. You can also invest in some products that can refresh your skin and hair, such as dry shampoo or cleansing wipes.
