Imagine a city that ignites a passion within you that you never knew existed – a city where you’re empowered to do what you love. That’s exactly what happens when you visit Singapore.
Whether you’re a foodie, trendsetter, or explorer, anyone and everyone who visits Singapore will leave inspired, challenged, and refreshed. In fact, some of our favorite books, teas, and home products from Singapore came to life because these entrepreneurs and authors were so inspired by different aspects of the city.
Hear how these individuals made their passions possible in this multi-dimensional city.
An island of inspirations
Singapore truly is the city of possibilities — and for author Kevin Kwan, the city combined with his passion for writing is what inspired the best-selling novel, Crazy Rich Asians. “The incredible foodie scene, the diversity of cultures, the past colliding with the present – all of that is, I hope, captured and infused throughout my novel.” — Kevin Kwan, Author of Crazy Rich Asians
A design junkie’s dream
Singapore has no shortage of picture-worthy streets and jaw-dropping views. Take it from designers like Bryan Chen, co-founder of The Forest Factory, as he captured everything he loved about the streets of Singapore and used it to develop his brand. “Walking down the streets of Singapore, you will see many vibrant colors and motifs from different cultures all harmoniously co-existing side-by-side. This has definitely influenced our aesthetics. The visual design of our Peranakan coasters was heavily influenced by the Peranakan tiles that can be found in Joo Chiat/Katong neighborhood.” — Bryan Chen, Co-Founder and Chief Designer, The Forest Factory
Best of both worlds for foodies
The city-state’s unique culture bridges the gap between the East and the West. For the founder of Gryphon Tea, Tian Wee Lim, this blend was most evident in Singapore’s food. “With Singapore being a hotspot for a steady mix of Asian and Western cultures, it means my curious palate will always have something new to try. And because tea is in my blood, I can’t help but go, ‘Will this go well with this or that tea? Will this dish taste good as a tea?’ In these circumstances, it’s really hard to not get inspired!” — Tian Wee Lim, Founder and Executive Director, Gryphon Tea
Hidden treasures in Singapore
Beyond the delicious food and incredible scenery, there’s so much more to Singapore. From experiences at a hawker center to rooftop bars, one lifetime isn’t enough to discover all that Singapore has to offer. “I find Singapore endlessly inspiring – it is my muse and the setting for all of my books. In my stories, I try to peer beneath the pristine veneer of Singapore that the rest of the world sees – and share my Singapore with them. ” — Cheryl Lu-Lien Tan, Author of Singapore Noir
Unforgettable nature
Aside from the architecture and hustle bustle of the city, Singapore knows how to slow it down and give its visitors a breather with its beautiful greenery, which covers half of the island. Fueled by her passion for scents, Cherylynne Clews, Owner of To Be Calm, captured these unforgettable experiences in her creations. “Singapore Journey candle is a perfect example of creating a fragrance memory. Everyone who lives in Singapore has the wonderful pleasure of the fragrance of Frangipanis that are dotted all across this beautiful country and seemingly endlessly in bloom.” — Cherylynne Clews, Creative Director and Owner, To Be Calm
More than meets the eye
There’s really no end to Singapore’s charm — and author Amanda Lee Koe couldn’t agree more. With Singapore’s clinically “clean” reputation, it’s easy to overlook the city-state as “it is what it is.” But turns out, that couldn’t be further from the truth. “I’d like for the dirt between the lines of my stories to allow more layers of interfacing with Singapore, other than the ones we already have in our heads.” — Amanda Lee Koe, Author of Ministry of Moral Panic
