Some dads teach their daughters to drive and some dads buy their daughters nice jewelry, but this dad created an entire brand for his daughter.

Bill Xiang has been working in the beauty industry since he graduated college, so it’s safe to say he knows a thing or two about great makeup. After the birth of his daughter, Yarie, Xiang decided to create RealHer, a makeup brand that would empower his little girl. Check out our exclusive interview with Xiang and see why he considers himself a feminist.

How did you come up with the name RealHer?
My daughter is named Yarie, but we call her “Rie Rie.” I wanted to use her name as a brand name, but I also wanted the brand name to be meaningful and inspirational. So I chose the word “real” (which sounds like “Rie”), as the first component of our name. And this brand is for her — so, RealHer.

Why did you decide to focus on makeup specifically?
After years of business, making money is really not our most urgent priority. I want to do something that can help make a difference; I want to empower women, to inspire women to be themselves, to fight for the equality of all women —- including my little girl. I was disheartened by so many of these brands that show its consumers that they’re not enough: not poreless enough, skinny enough, tall enough, conforming enough. I wanted to give my daughter a way to start her day that makes her feel great.

What does being a feminist mean to you?
My definition of being a feminist is that you believe in gender equality, and also take actions to empower, motivate, and inspire women. For RealHer, our brand mission is to empower women to embrace their strengths and weaknesses alike, and to let makeup act as a source of confidence and inspiration.

What was most important to you when developing the packaging for RealHer?
We had the idea to put a motivational quote on each of our products. When I read about raising daughters, in particular, it emphasized the importance of starting their day with affirmation. There are a lot of studies that show how it improves her day, makes her have better interactions with those around her, and can really have a positive effect on her overall well-being and social satisfaction.
