Oribe Canales, a celebrity hairstylist and entrepreneur, died Sunday at 62 years old. Zaki Amin told The New York Times that Canales was admitted into cancer treatment in New York last month and sadly lost his battle due to a liver and kidney failure.
Although the passing of Canales is a tragedy, we want to celebrate his life by recognizing a few of his admirable accomplishments and the impact he had in the beauty world.
Runway royalty
Canales rose to fame as he swiftly dominated the high-fashion world with his dramatic runway creations. He worked with couture designer brands like Chanel and Versace. Throughout his runway career, he created strong relationships with models at both shows and photo shoots, one of them being Cindy Crawford. The world-famous model admired his art by saying, “it was hair that felt larger than life.”
Celebrity status
Of course, after learning of the all-star runway stylist, celebrities were vying for a chance to work with Canales. He’s worked with everyone from Miley Cyrus and Kim Kardashian to Ellen DeGeneres, but he’s best known for his partnership with Jennifer Lopez as he styled her hair to stardom in the early 2000s. “Oribe and I just fell in love with each other,” said Lopez. “He’d play with my hair and I’d dance around. I’d feel like a million bucks.”
Entrepreneur
Canales took his career a step further in 1984 when he opened his first salon in Manhattan, New York – he would eventually open five total locations in New York and Florida. In addition to running several salons, he started a hair care line in 2008 known as Oribe Hair Care, which featured luxurious hair care essentials (we were lucky enough to feature the Oribe Gold Lust Dry Shampoo in the FabFitFun Winter Box).
