Females directors are pretty outnumbered by male directors in the film industry — but that doesn’t stop women from directing some uh-mazing films.
And we’re giving some love to female directors with a list of our fave films from rom-coms to dramas. Get ready to plan your next movie night!
The Proposal directed by Anne Fletcher
You can thank this rom-com queen for some of the most hilarious and heartwarming moments. Fletcher has directed some of the best films in one of our fave genres including 27 Dresses and Hot Pursuit.
The Intern directed by Nancy Meyers
It seems that whatever Meyers touches turns into movie gold. Though this delightful flick about a 70-year old intern is her latest project, Meyers has directed some of our fave films like The Holiday, What Women Want, and The Parent Trap.
Bright Star directed by Jane Campion
You’ll become entangled in the tragic romance between John Keats and Fanny Brawne. Because of Campion’s in-depth research of the poet, everything from the dialogue to the music has the beauty and rhythm of poetry.
Suffragette directed by Sarah Gavron
Powerhouse actresses like Carey Mulligan, Helena Bonham Carter, and Meryl Streep portray the struggles and sacrifices that British women endured in order to gain the right to vote. It’s no wonder there was a woman at the helm of this film.
Frozen directed by Jennifer Lee
Lee and her directing partner, Chris Buck, won an Academy Award for their work on the film that has everyone singing Let It Go. Can’t get enough of Elsa and Anna? We have good news! Lee is working on a Frozen sequel.
Fifty Shades of Grey directed by Sam Taylor-Johnson
A woman penned the novel, so it makes sense that only a female director would direct this film. Turning a beloved novel into a movie often comes with many obstacles, but Taylor-Johnson successfully portrayed the intense sexual nature of the story.
You’ve Got Mail directed by Nora Ephron
Meg Ryan, Tom Hanks, and New York City — what more could you want in a ’90s rom-com? How about a female director who really knows what she’s doing? Ephron already had Sleepless in Seattle under her belt and went on to direct Julie & Julia.
Money Monster directed by Jodie Foster
Many actresses also love to put their talents to use behind the camera, and Jodie Foster is no exception. Did you know she even directed two episodes of Orange Is The New Black? You go girl!
Stick It directed by Jessica Bendinger
We can’t get enough of the witty sarcasm and hilarious antics of the elite gymnasts in this movie. Add some cool visual effects, an awesome soundtrack, a young Kellan Lutz, and you’ll see why we’re so in love with Bendinger’s film.
Marie Antoinette directed by Sophia Coppola
What do you get when you cross the luxurious French lifestyle of the famous Queen of Versailles with modern rock music? A Coppola masterpiece. You’ll drool over Antoinette’s extravagant wardrobe and marvel at the court rituals that characterized the opulent era.
