It’s National Selfie Day (yes, that’s a thing), and the age of selfie-shaming is officially long gone. If you’re feeling extra confident and want to snap a picture to share with the world, then you should feel completely empowered to do just that. Besides, the only like that really matters is your own!

Lighting is key
When setting the scene for your picture, natural light is always the way to go. If you can position yourself near a window or outside in the sun, you’ll capture a gorgeous glow. Avoid backlighting and be mindful of shadows if the sun is high.

Learn your angles
Try snapping a picture holding your phone on the side and tilting it rather than keeping it straight in front of you. Instead of angling your head, move your phone to the side or rest it on a tall surface. Get to know your angles and then stick to your favorites.

Elongate
Stand up straight and keep your shoulders down to elongate the neck. By creating space above your shoulders, you can better accentuate and sharpen your features, such as your collarbones and jawline.

Smize, eyes, and pouts
Whatever you’re feeling, go with it! When in doubt, you can’t go wrong with a smile. You can also channel your inner Tyra Banks circa America’s Next Top Model and raise your eyebrows to make your eyes look larger. Wherever the camera is, look up towards it, and relax your mouth (Tip: exhale through your lips so you don’t look tense).

The more, the merrier
Take lots of pictures! Just keep snapping so you can choose from a wide variety of selfies until you find the one you love.
