If you live in a small apartment, then you know the struggle of trying to make the most out of a tight space — or even worse, when you run out of space for all of your clothes.

Whether your clothing rods are starting to bend inwards or you find yourself constantly throwing out or donating clothes to make room, here are some useful tips for maximizing your limited closet space.

Invest in under-bed storage
If your bed frame didn’t already come with under-bed storage units, don’t fret — you can buy a separate set of drawers to put under your bed or even DIY one out of old shoe boxes or empty storage bins. Store your shoes, hats, or accessories into the new units and slide them under your bed!

Get a clothing rack
It’s a great way to expand your closet space, but it also acts as a cool decorative piece for your room. You can use your new free-standing closet outside of your actual closet to showcase your newer numbers.

Add a second rod (or third) to your closet
You can do this by raising the existing bar in your closet and adding a second rod below it. The extra hanging space will not only create more space, but it will also help you stay more organized.

Utilize soda can tabs or s-hooks
The next time you finish a bottle of La Croix, keep the can tab and loop it onto a hanger. Essentially, this allows you to layer your hangers with the tabs, creating a tier of clothes. If you don’t like the look of soda can tabs, you can even opt for s-hooks for an efficient way of organizing your garments.

Get the most out of your closet door
You can attach hooks or rods to the back of a door to hang your scarves, jackets, hats, or outwear. Not only that, there are plenty of shoe racks on the market that you can hang over your door to clear some floor space.

Add a shoe shelf beneath your dresser
Create a slide-out storage unit that allows you to neatly store shoes under the dresser. Create one yourself by flipping over an old picture frame, adding some scratch pads to the back so it slides, and placing your shoes on it.

Tuck out-of-season clothes away
Chances are, you’re not going to wear your winter jackets during the warmer months (and vice versa). So if you don’t want to get rid of any of your clothes, simply store the out-of-season pieces away to create more space.
