FALL 2020 BOX PARTNER

We all face imposter syndrome occasionally. It’s not unusual for moments of self-doubt to creep in, making us question our qualifications or fear that we’ll be discovered as a “fraud.” But it’s how we handle those feelings of insecurity that will help determine our success moving forward. Take a cue from these 10 female founders who offer their best advice on dealing with imposter syndrome.

Look back at your past achievements
“When I am confronted with these emotions, I look back on my experiences and focus on how I solved a problem or made things happen for the better. These moments of reflection give me the confidence boost I need to move past fear or doubt. I also read and do plenty of research to arm myself with the tools and information I need to be successful.” – Vera Oh, co-CEO of Voesh

Limit your time on social media
“Get off social media first and foremost! I’ve actually taken a nice break from it and I’ve found I’m much happier and free (and isn’t that so sad?!). We have to remember that social media isn’t real life. Surround yourself with girlfriends that build you up; they are the best medicine during those self-doubting times. Go for a hike, get outside. Nature always helps me as well; it’s grounding and puts everything in perspective.” Kristin Cavallari, founder of Uncommon James

Think of what your loved one would tell you
“I think of someone positive in my life and what they would say to me at that moment — it always works! Lean on your community of close friends and family that love you.” – Lindsey Boyd, co-founder of The Laundress

Confront the doubt
“Take a step back, look at it all realistically, and put it all into perspective. And, of course, speak up and confront the doubt! Doubts can take a life of their own really quickly, but are often resolved within no time if you face them and, if applicable, discuss them with the people involved.” – Zoe Roukema, co-founder of Glossmetics

Love yourself
“If you don’t have anyone to speak to, it is helpful to remind yourself this fear is all in your head. You can choose to let it dominate you or you can put it aside and carry on with your journey. Sometimes I think we can be so harsh on ourselves; remind yourself to love yourself.” – Emma Hu, co-founder of Vitamasques

Step back and reflect on your journey
“I go for a long run and reflect on the journey I’ve been on — the blood, sweat, and tears you’ve put into achieving where you are today. I think you have to remind yourself that the path to success is not always down to luck or “flukes” but also hard work and failures, which you’ve learned from.” – Ning Cheah, founder and CEO of The Beauty Crop

Practice gratitude
“I find it very useful to read inspiring quotes, especially about gratitude. When you are feeling like your self-esteem needs a boost, think of all the things you can be grateful for.” – Jeanneke Malan, managing owner of Mia Mélange

Trust your gut
“When in doubt, stop and listen to your intuition; for the most part, it’s telling you the right answer. Speak with someone whose opinion you trust and allow yourself time, no matter how long, to think, evaluate the risks, and only make the right decision. In the end, your challenges are your learning curve, which only makes you stronger to withstand and face the true facts.” – Elaine Binder, CEO of Spongellé

Turn to your team
“Having the right partner and team is a huge key to success. Moments of self-doubt will happen, whether it’s from you or a team member. Knowing that you have that support when you will inevitably need it is not only comforting, it’s necessary.” – Anh-Thu Dannerstedt, founder of NCLA Beauty

Remind yourself of the “why”
“It all comes back to purpose. So many people, myself included, struggle with imposter syndrome. But when I remember the ‘why,’ that fuels me to keep going anyway.” – Michelle Wahler, co-founder and CEO of Beyond Yoga
