The vision is clear: a world without breast cancer. Susan G. Komen’s mission is unwavering toward making this vision a reality. This organization is determined to save lives by meeting the most critical needs in our communities, and investing in breakthrough research to prevent and cure breast cancer.
Through early detection and effective treatments, they have helped reduce the breast cancer mortality rate in the U.S. by 42% since 1989. But their work is far from over.
Breast cancer deaths can be reduced by 30% today by giving people access to the care and support they need right now using Komen’s Patient Care Center Programs, which include the Breast Care Helpline, the Screening & Diagnostics Program, and the Financial Assistance Program, along with patient navigation. Komen has invested more than $7.7 million in community health programs in the last year alone to ensure people get the help they need to understand the disease, access screening and diagnostic exams, remove barriers to care, and receive support every step of the way.
Komen’s Impact
- Komen has invested nearly $1.1 billion in breast cancer research, more than any other nonprofit, second only to the U.S. government.
- 69% of funds donated to Komen go directly to patient care.
- More than 35,000 people are served by the Patient Care Center every year.
- Komen invested $21.7 million in 48 breast cancer research grants this year.
- More than 125 people receive support from the Patient Care Center every day.
- More than 98% of patients say support from the Financial Assistance Program improved their quality of life.
This year, Komen’s Patient Care Center expected to serve about 37,000 people across all of the programs. However, based on the skyrocketing support requests from the Komen Financial Assistance Program so far this year, they are now expecting to serve more than 42,000 annual patients. As a result of this expanding need for financial support, Komen estimates that available funding for financial assistance will be depleted by December 2022. Komen needs an additional $2.6 million to meet the need for financial support through March 2023, otherwise they may unfortunately need to turn some patients away.
