Everyone’s talking about cryptocurrency and NFTs, but what exactly are they and why should you care? We’re chatting with our friends Brit Morin and Jaime Schmidt who founded BFF, a new community that aims to give women an opportunity like never before.

What IS cryptocurrency?
Cryptocurrency, or crypto for short, is a digital currency that is used to pay for goods and services most recently in the Web 3.0 ecosystem. It is exchanged through a computer network without the use of a bank as the middleman.

Why do you think women are hesitant to enter into the crypto world?
Crypto is generally associated with tech and finance, both of which have been historically male-dominated industries. We believe women are taking longer to onboard not because of lack of interest, but because they want to have a better understanding of what they’re investing in before financially committing. For many, before BFF, there wasn’t a community that resonated or addressed their unique needs.

What inspired you to launch BFF?
BFF was created to support women and nonbinary people in getting their share of knowledge and opportunity in Web 3.0. We believe that the new technologies of today will fundamentally change the way we work, exchange money, and create ownership of both virtual and real-life assets. Whether you’re an artist, entrepreneur, or any type of digital user, you should learn about what’s coming. There’s a new era emerging, and everyone deserves a seat at the table.

BFF’s inaugural NFT collection, You, celebrates the uniqueness of women and non-binary friends across our community and the world. In her renowned style, artist Jade Purple Brown brings vibrant color and dynamic expression to 10,000 unique pieces in the collection. Every NFT has unique perks built in, plus utility within the BFF universe
.

How does it work?

BFF is an open-access community developed to build equity in the new economy. While it’s free to join and open to all, community members can unlock additional perks through our NFT collections. Our community comes together on Discord and other social channels, and through virtual and IRL events. BFF has a robust roadmap, including multiple NFT collections, workshops, talent incubators, large-scale events, entertainment projects, software projects, and more.

Can you explain the difference between cryptocurrency and NFTs?
NFT stands for non-fungible token, a non-interchangeable unit of data stored on a blockchain that can be sold and traded. NFTs range from profile picture collections you might see on Twitter, to collectible “1 to 1” art, to tokens that unlock access and membership to different communities. Cryptocurrency only has economic value and isn’t unique. Within a particular currency, one token has the same value as the next. You can exchange a version of cryptocurrency for NFTs.

What is the ultimate goal for BFF?
We want to contribute to a more equitable playing field. Our goal is to see more women and non-binary people not only thriving in Web 3.0, but also sharing their knowledge to bring more people to the table. Over time, we aim to create one of the largest decentralized brands on the internet — built by women, for women. This has never been done before in history, and we can’t wait to see what happens when all of us can pour our creative ideas into the same pot.
