Dressing up can be incredibly fun, especially if your entire group likes to go all in (go big or go home, right?). But there’s nothing worse than having to drop some serious cash on an outfit you’ll probably never wear again.

Here are some DIY costume ideas to keep your celebration affordable this year.

Damn Daniel
The internet phenomenon “Damn Daniel” went viral last year and occupied a particular soft spot in people’s hearts. All you really need is some white vans (or any bright white sneakers) and some generic high school skater boy clothing.

Pennywise, IT
Relevant, ultra creepy, and easy to pull off, Pennywise is going to be a favorite this year. But you can stand out in a sea of clowns by adding your own spin on the popular character. All you need is a red balloon, white face, and a wig if you really want to take it to the next level.

Helga, Hey Arnold!
’90s culture and aesthetics are making a comeback, so any character from the TV show Hey Arnold! would be amazing. To dress up as Helga, grab a white t-shirt, pink dress, pink bow, and some pigtails. Bonus points if you dye your hair blonde.

Film Noir Grayscale
If you’re feeling nostalgic, a cool grayscale costume could suit your fancy. Grab some black, white, and gray clothing (business wear works pretty well) and a beret or fedora. Then paint your face gray to pull the look together.

Joanne the Scammer
If you have a fake mink blanket, then you’re already halfway there. Just add high heels, a blonde wig, and draw on facial hair to transform into the fictional character.

Beyoncé
Queen Bey’s diverse style makes it easy to put together an outfit from something you already own – preferably something glam. Throw on a pair of heels, let your hair down, and voila!

Roy Lichtenstein Painting
Become a comic strip character by drawing colored dots on your face. Don’t forget to add a speech bubble with something like “Whaam!” to carry around as a prop! Here’s a tutorial on how to achieve the look.

Scarecrow
Simple and cute — simply paint stitches on your mouth and braid your hair for an easy costume. Slip into a plaid button down and boots to complete the look.

Tourist
This one couldn’t be easier to recreate. Simply mix and match all of your nerdiest dad gear such as Hawaiian shirts, cargo shorts, sandals with socks, fanny packs, cameras, and backpacks (the sky’s the limit!).
