Job networking is a necessary yet sometimes slightly intimidating part of the working world. But before you work up a sweat, keep in mind that there are ways to make it less of a chore and more of an opportunity for personal growth.

Here are some tips to help networking less intimidating.

Figure out who to talk to
Walking up to random people at happy hour events with your résumé or calling people with no clear, strategic connection will only waste your time and theirs. The first step in strategic networking is figuring out who to talk to. Figure out the job title, industry, or company you’re interested in and start researching people who work in similar positions or at your desired company.

Change your perspective
The best way to combat anxiety is to view networking like making new friends. Smile, introduce yourself, ask about their background and interests, offer information about yourself, find similarities and areas of interest, and spark a conversation.

Talk about them
When it comes to networking, the emphasis shouldn’t be on you. Do your homework to learn about the other person’s past and current career and ask informed questions. Before you know it, you’ll find yourself in a productive and engaging conversation.

Fan the flame of common interests
When you find a topic of intrigue for both parties, focus on it — maybe both of you are alumni of the same university or you’ve both lived abroad. Finding areas of commonality to talk about will build a sense of interest. Arouse the other person’s interest by telling them something new and informative about it. For example, “Did you know that our alma mater has launched a new program in fine arts in the last year?”

Offer before you ask
Yes, you’re speaking with this person in hopes that they can help you grow your career, which is why you can’t ask before you give. Offer your expertise, skills, or connections to help them in their personal or professional endeavors.

Add your ask at the end
Before leaving a conversation or email communication with another professional, ask if it’s OK to stay in touch and if you can send along your résumé (keep in mind that this is your end goal!).
