‘Glowing skin is always in’ is a saying so true that it’s become a cliche. But no matter what you see on social media, achieving the coveted look of a radiant, healthy complexion poses challenges for us all.
Among makeup artists that understand the struggles of scoring bright, perfected skin, only a few can deliver on-demand luminosity like celebrity makeup artist Patrick Ta (who does so on-the-reg for beauties like Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, Gigi Hadid, Shay Mitchell and Adriana Lima). Known for creating looks that feature trendy nude lips and luminescent skin on the face and body, one of Hollywood’s most in-demand experts and founder of his own beauty line reveals his top tips on how to achieve naturally glowing skin.
Properly prep the skin
“To achieve that ‘glow-getting’ makeup look, skin prep is key,” he begins, sharing that La Mer Renewal Oil is his favorite luxury beauty pick. Using the luxury facial oil from La Mer, Ta hydrates and preps the face like an artist with his canvas. If you’re not a fan of oils, a brief facial massage (by hand or with gua sha) aids with absorption and gets your skin’s micro-circulation going for a bit of additional glow. You can also begin the preparatory process with the application of a mask like the WEI Two-in-One Purify and Glow Mask Collection, which features a brown sugar mask to give skin a flawless base for makeup and a golden root mask to minimize the appearance of pores.
Boost your foundation
“Sometimes I’ll even add a few drops [of the oil] to my foundation for that ‘glass skin’ effect,” Ta adds. If you have dry skin, you’ll appreciate this hack — especially in the winter. If you have combination or oily skin that’s prone to excess shine, consider a balancing oil (like squalane), bring blotting sheets in your purse or use a face mist, like the Avène Thermal Spring Water, before and after for a subtle dewiness that won’t turn into shine.
Highlight the highest points of the cheeks
Technique is everything when it comes to applying your highlighter. “When I highlight the face, I spray my Major Glow Highlighting Mist on the highest points of the cheeks,” he says. A general rule of thumb when it comes to applying highlighter is applying it just where the light glints off the angles of the face and cheekbones. Even if you haven’t been blessed with the facial contours of a supermodel, some quick contouring and thoughtfully-placed shine can make all the difference. We love the tarte™ tarteist™ PRO glow highlight & contour palette because it has gorgeous champagne, pearl and opalescent highlighting shades that can be layered on the cheeks, underneath the brow bone and on the cupid’s bow.
Don’t forget your body
One of our favorite lessons we learned from Ta is not to neglect the skin of the body. The clavicles, shoulders and decolletage give us extra opportunities to bask in the spotlight. “To amplify glow all over the body, I’ll spray [my Major Glow Highlighting Mist] on the decolletage and shoulders after I’ve applied my Major Glow Body Oil,” he reveals. Trust and believe that this extra-TLC is a fabulous final touch. You can also blend a few drops of 111Skin Rose Gold Radiance Booster onto the skin for a lasting luminosity. Lastly, don’t forget to seal in all the hard work with a setting spray like the Skindinavia The Makeup Finishing Spray to prevent meltdown and shine.
