If you’ve ever experienced anxiety, you know that it’s not easy to shake. You suddenly find your mind racing with negative thoughts, your heart beating faster, and your breath starting to quicken.

Anxiety is something many people struggle with, which is why it’s important to find coping strategies that work for you. Here are a few ideas on how to reduce anxiety so you know what to do the next time you find yourself in a state of worry and angst.

Practice mindfulness
Think of mindfulness as a quick and easy version of meditation. By focusing on the present moment, honing in on your breath, and becoming more aware of your surroundings, you’ll start to feel calmer and more at ease — whatever the situation.

Practice gratitude
If there’s one tried-and-true technique for reducing anxiety, it’s gratitude. Here’s a great tip: make a list of 10 things you’re grateful for. It can be as simple as “I’m thankful that I have a roof over my head and food on my table.” Each time you’re feeling anxious, read over the list. You’ll be amazed at how quickly it puts things into perspective.

Exercise
Have you ever heard anyone say they’re going for a run to clear their head? It’s well-known that exercise releases endorphins as it instantly uplifts your mood. Whether it’s going for a jog or taking a yoga class, a quick workout will do the trick when you’re feeling tense.

Spend time in nature
Another quick and easy way to de-stress? Go outside (it’s good for the soul!). Research shows that “forest bathing,” or spending time outdoors, helps to unwind and reduce anxiety.

Practice self-care
Indulge in a fancy massage, go to the spa and sweat out your worries, or simply get a mani and pedi. Treat yourself to forget about your stress and let your mind relax.
