What you do before bed can really affect how well you sleep. If you spend your last waking hours in front of the blue light of your computer screen, it’ll mess with your circadian rhythm. On the other hand, if you have a relaxing bedtime ritual, you’ll be able to doze off and wake up refreshed.
But how do you know what nighttime ritual is best for you? Below, psychic and astrologer Deborah Graham shares the one thing you should do before bed, according to your zodiac sign.
Aries (March 21 – April 19): Journal
“[Aries have] a tendency to take in so much energy,” says Graham, “so you have to declutter all the things [that happened].” You can do this by writing down your feelings and thoughts about the day in a journal before you go to sleep.
Taurus (April 20 – May 20): Go on a walk (barefoot)
Graham recommends that you take your shoes off and go for a walk so that your feet are touching the ground. “It’s a way to ground yourself and root yourself because Tauruses have a tendency to be strong and overpowering. So if they can release all their emotional anxiety, it’ll help them feel lighter.”
Gemini (May 21 – June 20): Use amethyst
Geminis have a hard time slowing down their thoughts, and amethyst helps to clear the mind. Graham recommends a meditation where you hold amethyst up to your third chakra and around your belly button, then deeply inhale and exhale.
Cancer (June 21 – July 22): Take a bath
Cancers like water so a relaxing bath is a good way for them to wind down after a long day. Graham suggests using lavender sea salt to make the bath extra relaxing, leading to a good night’s rest so you wake up with a clear mind.
Leo (July 23 – August 22): Listen to music
Leos are creatures of habit, so a relaxing bedtime song every night is just what you need. They also tend to carry stress in their necks and shoulders, says Graham, and music helps minimize this tension because it works on the subconscious mind.
Virgo (August 23 – September 22): Stretch
Virgos need to feel purified and connected to the earth, and getting on the ground to stretch is a great way to do that, says Graham. While you’re stretching, breathe deeply and picture yourself surrounded by white light.
Libra (September 23 – October 22): Drink hot water
“[Libras] need to balance out their yin and yang because their energy has a way of going off in left field,” says Graham. “They have a tendency to take things to the extreme.” Plain hot water helps balance out your energy. To help clear out your emotions, picture a memory of when you felt safe and balanced.
Scorpio (October 23 – November 21): Second chakra meditation
Scorpios have high sexual energy and a tendency toward anger, says Graham. They can release their pent-up anger and emotion by sitting cross-legged for five to 10 minutes and squeezing and releasing their pelvis, the home of the second chakra.
Sagittarius (November 22 – December 21): Hug yourself
Sagittariuses can get defensive and want to protect themselves and others. “You need to fulfill that sense of protection and that sense of alignment,” says Graham. To feel protected before bed, give yourself a hug, rock back and forth, and picture the color red.
Capricorn (December 22 – January 19): Use cedarwood oil
Capricorns are drawn to the woods, so putting cedarwood oil on your wrist and smelling it should help provide a sense of calmness, says Graham. “That will really help you feel like you’re in your own space, and [it also] helps you flush out any negative energy.”
Aquarius (January 20 – February 18): Drink chamomile tea
Aquariuses are very inquisitive. “They’re deep thinkers, and they have a tendency to be a little more in their head than in their heart,” says Graham. They have a way of shutting down and not showing a lot of emotion, so they can wake up feeling like they don’t want to be around people. Chamomile tea helps you relax before bed so that you can get enough rest.
Pisces (February 19 – March 20): Tapping
“Pisces have a tendency to care and worry about everyone else and put their own self aside, so by the end of the day, they’re exhausted,” says Graham. One way to recharge your battery is through a “tapping” technique – tap your two index fingers on your third eye (in between your eyes) for 15 to 20 seconds each night to bring the energy back into your head.
