Nude lips are always in, no matter the era or trend. But neutral tones aren’t always the easiest colors to rock, and many times people avoid wearing the muted shades for fear of looking “washed out.”

On the contrary, when properly wearing the right nude lip shade, the color can make lips look plumper, and give an effortless glam effect to any look. Below are some of our favorite ways to make any nude look good.

Line your lip with a darker shade. One of the greatest tips we could give for those struggling with nude colors is to lip line with a slightly deeper nude. When you line with a darker color, the structure of your lips will stand out more, making sure to differentiate between your lips and face. Be sure to fill the corners of lips with the darker liner as well, so that the lipstick will blend seamlessly. Try these liners: Stripdown from MAC for those with light skin tones, Latergram from Tarte for medium skin tones, and Urban Decay’s 24/7 Glide-On Pencil in 1993 for those with deeper skin tones.

Find the right shade. Nude is a relatively broad color. There are pale nudes, creamy nudes, brown nudes, pink nudes — the list goes on and on! Just because the pale nudes don’t work with your complexion doesn’t mean a brown-nude won’t. Try on different colors and formulas so you can get a better feel for what you’ll be most comfortable wearing.

Make sure you add enough color on the rest of the face. Neutral lips are a hit for any makeup junkie who likes to rock bold eyeshadows and strong contours because a nude lip often times tones a dramatic look down — giving a nice overall balance. With that being said, you want to make sure you have a pretty flush of blush, bronze, and glow to really compliment nude shades. This will prevent the washed-out look.

Top it with a gloss. Finally, to make any nude look finished, we love topping it off with a gloss. Glossy lips will draw more attention to the color, and depending on what type of gloss you like, it can either lighten the nude or deepen it up a bit. It’s the perfect way to amp up any look.
