New Year’s resolutions have gotten somewhat of a bad rap. They’re responsible for crowding gyms in January and emptying them out by February. We blame ’em for failed diets and half-completed passion projects.

The reason most of us (no matter how willing or determined we are) struggle to keep our resolutions is because they tend to require extreme lifestyle changes. And you can’t expect some miraculous overnight transformation to take place just because it’s the start of a new year.

However, what Jan. 1 does hold is a sense of renewal…and a fresh start! If you, too, are indifferent about making any New Year’s resolutions this year, here’s a list that you will actually follow through with. The best thing about this list? It consists of only one resolution:

Make your bed every morning.
You might be asking, “Wait, what? Why?” While we established that when the clock strikes midnight on Jan 1., 2017, it won’t magically turn you into the most healthy, productive, or super human being you want to be…but we also know that it’s a great excuse (and temporal marker) to jumpstart your journey to becoming one.

Making your bed every morning forms the habit of making habits. As you get used to this morning routine, you will notice that it also becomes easier to make other constructive choices throughout the day. It’s the catalyst for small, easy, practical – yet collectively powerful habits that will ultimately shape your character and your life.

Forget the crash diet and make conscious choices during each meal. Don’t schedule a month of dinner dates you won’t follow through with, but do remind yourself to be present with those around you. Ditch the idea of making/saving whatever amount of money quickly. Instead, toss your change into a jar every night.

No, making your bed every morning in 2017 won’t change your life. But it will start to change you – and you can change your life.
