Whether you want to master your contour or achieve the perfect smoky eye, the right brush will definitely up your makeup game.

So which brushes should you invest in? We asked six makeup artists to share which makeup brushes (everything from bristle type to shape) every woman should have in her makeup bag.

High-quality brush
You might be surprised to learn that you can find high-quality bushes without making a huge dent in your bank account. Makeup artist Gabrielle Paci suggests using MODA brushes because the brand sells, “amazing quality brushes [that] are perfect for beginner artists all the way to pro-makeup artists.”

Natural hair brush
“I always try to get products that are as natural as possible,” says Paula Salas Bloise of LA Bloise Art. “I like soft brushes that are easy to clean and dry. Some of my favorite makeup [brush brands] are Crown Brush, e.l.f. Cosmetics, and Kat Von D. You can feel the difference in the application between brushes.”

Makeup artist Vivian Wang also suggests natural hair brushes. “[Use] Real Techniques Setting Brush for cream foundation and blush. It’s great for applying thin layers to build and control coverage, and it’s super affordable.”

Flat brush
“Flat brushes will allow for more concentrated application of color,” says Wang. “I like the Smith Cosmetics 256 Arrowhead Laydown Eyeshadow Brush. For blending out, I like the Smith Cosmetics 230 Quill Crease Brush.”

Contour brush
“My favorite makeup brushes are from Morphe,” says makeup artist Hadassah Ayanna. “My favorite brush is the Morphe E20 Oval Detail Buffer. This brush does it all — whether you’re applying your concealer or perfecting your contour — [and it] gives you a seamless blend.”

Brow brush
Eyebrows can really take your makeup look to the next, next level. “For eyebrows, Anastasia Beverly Hills Duel-Ended Firm Detail Brush is my all-time favorite when applying pomade or powder [because it] gives a clean, soft look,” says makeup artist Keyanna Banks.

Synthetic brush
Sue Perez, a two-time Emmy nominated makeup artist, says she prefers to “use synthetic artificial hair for applying cream eyeshadow, liners, eye base, concealer, and foundation [because it doesn’t] absorb pigment and the makeup washes out easily.”
