Moving to a new city is hard. Anyone who’s lived in multiple cities, states, or even countries can probably say they feel a lot like Jess from New Girl (sans the apartment full of quirky, childlike men as roommates).
If there’s anything we desire most when moving to a new city (besides fair rent prices), it’s friendships — not the type of friends you meet up with just to get drinks — rather true, unadulterated friendships. But we know it’s easier said than done.
So to ease the overwhelming and intimidating trek, here are some tips to help you separate the real from the fake.
Get involved in things you care about. Moving to a new city is a great opportunity to get involved in causes and organizations you care about. Once you do, you’ll meet people with similar interests and passions. It’s a guaranteed conversation starter and a paved road to meet like-minded people.
Step outside of your comfort zone. There’ll be ample opportunity to try new things so do what you normally wouldn’t agree to. By taking a chance and adventuring into the unknown, you’ll expand your net and meet people along the way. Don’t forget to flash that smile!
Say “yes” more than you say “no.” After a long day of work, the last thing you want to do is that cardio kickboxing class your co-worker invited you to, or go on that coffee date your BFF set you up with. But hey, just do it! The more open you are, the more friends you’ll make. Trust us.
Network, network, network. The word “networking” can seem intimidating and nerve-wracking, but what it really boils down to is asking questions and listening. Find ways you can help other people and ask them for help when you need it. Networking means learning to connect and taking an interest in people.
Put in the effort. Making friends is a lot like dating. So go out of your way to initiate conversation with your new co-worker or ask your spin buddy to hang outside of the studio. Of course, if there’s no chemistry or you just don’t click, then it’s perfectly OK to let it run its course.
