Cold weather makes you want to pile on all the layers, but you can end up looking like a puffy marshmallow. Luckily, there are ways to add those layers without the extra bulk and still look cute and stylish.

Here are eight tips to stay warm and fashionable during the cooler months.

Throw a sweater over a bodysuit or bralette

Got a low-cut sweater? Skip the undershirt and slide that chunky knit over a lacey bodysuit for a cheeky look. Have a gorgeous bra? Let it peek out from under the sweater to achieve a similar look. This layer may not do much to keep you warm, but it makes it easier to layer on thicker jackets and coats while looking chic.

Wear a turtleneck under a slip dress

This look’s been all over Instagram, and it couldn’t be easier to recreate. Grab any turtleneck and throw a slip dress over it to get the most out of both your summer and winter wardrobe.

Layer a button-up under a sweater

Sick of the same sweater and jeans combo? Make the look more interesting by layering a button-up under your knits. Not only will the preppy look add extra warmth, but it’s a look that’ll never go out of style.

Slip into skinny jeans and thigh high boots

If you’re going to invest in a pair of shoes, invest in thigh high boots. These year-round staples especially come in handy during the colder months because you get that extra layer to keep your legs nice and toasty.

Pair some tights under a long dress

If your winters are more moderate, you can get away with wearing dresses as long as you layer some tights underneath — the more opaque they are, the more heat you’ll retain!

Style a long-sleeve tee with a tank top

Similar to the slip dress look, layer any long-sleeve tee with a tank of your choice. From a form-fitting crop top to a flowy babydoll top, the variations are truly endless with this layered look.

Keep the first layer light

With a light base, you can stack on more layers that’ll actually keep you warm. We love throwing a blazer on over a tank because not only is it totally on trend, but it’s also thin enough to layer another jacket over it.

Throw on a cardigan

Cardigans are a wardrobe essential, especially when it comes to layering. Throw on your favorite outerwear before stepping out into the cold and then rock the cardigan on its own once you get to your destination.

Top it off with a scarf

A scarf is a no-brainer, but it really works wonders in keeping you warm. Plus, if you get a little toasty, it’s easy to take it right off without detracting from your look.

Add a duster or kimono

Dusters and kimonos are a dream to layer with during winter. They’re lightweight, stylish, and flattering on just about anyone. We recommend adding another coat over your favorite duster if you need extra warmth.
