Your jewelry collection probably consists of a mix of costume jewelry and some precious gold or silver pieces. Regardless of its material, it’s important to regularly cleanse or wipe it down to keep it in tip top shape!

Here are a few tips to keep all of your beautiful jewels (like your Jook & Nona Tag Necklace featured in our Welcome Box V.2!) looking good as new.

Don’t Wear It in the Pool
Although wearing a necklace or three with your bathing suit looks super chic, the chlorine in pools and jacuzzis can damage both precious metals and can oxidize other metals, causing coatings to chip.

Don’t Coat Them With Nail Polish!
Many people like to coat their jewelry with clear nail polish to keep if from tarnishing, but this can actually cause discoloration. You can coat the back side or the inside of costume rings to keep your skin from turning green, but don’t cover the whole thing!

Take Your Jewelry off During Certain Tasks
When you’re washing your hands, cleaning dishes, gardening, etc., leave your jewelry behind. You could risk denting and damaging your pieces, or you could break them completely — so it’s best to just keep them off.

Clean Your Jewelry Frequently
Costume jewelry should be cleaned after every time you wear it. Wiping it off with a soft cloth should do the job, and be sure to avoid harsh chemicals. Precious metals can be cleaned in a variety of ways. You can also buy cleaner from a jeweler, or you can clean costume jewelry with DIY solutions.

Store Your Jewelry Correctly
Store your jewelry in a space where it doesn’t overlap or get tangled within each other. Hang necklaces and bracelets and try to keep your rings and bracelets in a secure place. If you’re traveling, don’t throw them all into a bag, as it’ll tarnish faster!
