According to WHO, at least one billion people in the world have a vision impairment that could have been prevented or is yet to be addressed. The burden of eye conditions and vision impairment is not borne equally: it is often far greater in low- and middle-income countries, among older people and in women, and in rural and disadvantaged communities.
In Bangladesh, TOMS has worked with Seva and Ispahani Islamia Eye Institute and Hospital to:
– Establish five vision centers
– Provide more than 41,000 medical treatments
– Complete over 1,400 eye surgeries
Shorifa Begum, a 46-year-old housewife who lives in Bangladesh with her two grown sons and elderly husband, is one of the many people this donation has been able to help. Her vision was deteriorating, but after a visit to a vision center, she was able to receive a subsidized surgery to remove a cataract from her eye. “I could never think that I could operate my eye. This is unbelievable that I could restore my eyesight by Ispahani Islamia Eye Institute and Hospital. I am blessed. I am thankful to IIEI&H to support me.”
