It’s rare for a beauty technique to withstand the test of time because, you know, trends constantly come and go. So when we found out about dry brushing, a tried-and-true ancient beauty technique that’s recently picked up steam again, we were totally here for it.
For those who aren’t familiar, dry brushing is when you essentially “brush” your skin to reduce cellulite, promote lymphatic drainage, exfoliate skin, and boost circulation. But that’s not all the benefits!
We chatted with Emilio Smeke, CEO of Daily Concepts, to break down everything you need to know about dry brushing.
What is it?
Well, it’s exactly as it sounds – you take a body brush often covered in firm, natural bristles and massaging nodules (we love the Daily Concepts Daily Detox Brush), and massage it across your skin. “[Dry brushing is] a method of self-care that involves deep exfoliation [of] the skin, enhancement of blood flow and circulation, and accelerated skin cell turnover,” says Smeke. “It has been said that because of the exfoliating and circulation-enhancing effects of dry brushing, it diminishes the appearance of cellulite, imperfections, and helps detoxify the lymphatic system.”
How do you use it?
While there’s no rhyme or reason to dry brushing, experts recommend taking long strokes toward the heart for maximum results. “Feel free to [dry brush] your feet, knees, elbows, or any other areas with rougher skin patches,” explains Smeke. You can adjust the pressure depending on how sensitive your skin is – you might build a tolerance the more you dry brush!
Any tips to make the most of dry brushing?
“[Use] high-grade lotions and oil blends after a dry brushing session in order to rehydrate and nourish the skin,” recommends Smeke. Oh, and don’t forget to store your brush in a dry and low-humidity area to maintain the integrity of the wood!
Who should try it?
“Anyone with skin,” says Smeke. “We joke, but truly dry brushing is a non-discriminating form of skin care.” Well, you don’t have to tell us twice!
