Whether you’re rocking platinum blonde or a subtle balayage, it’s important to use a shampoo that won’t strip your color-treated hair, ultimately leaving it dull and lifeless.
So we asked hair colorists to share their top favorite products for highlights, lowlights, and everything in between.
From balancing to toning formulas, check out the 10 best color-safe shampoos below.
“I believe Aveda’s color conserve™ shampoo is one of the best color-safe shampoos out there,” says Vanessa Pilger, the artistic designer at Valenti Salon & Spa in Cincinnati, Ohio. It keeps hair color vibrant longer and gently cleanses without fading.
“Balancing pH levels after a color service is huge in retaining desired results,” says Jenna Mast, a colorist at Fox & Jane Salon in New York City. “It can take weeks for pH to return to normal, but with this shampoo, it’s faster and the results are just incredible.”
“This is the best color-safe shampoo I’ve used,” says celebrity colorist Marshall Lin. “The tea-infused formula nourishes the hair and scalp (starting directly at the root) to really hydrate every strand without stripping color,” he adds.
“I love this shampoo because it keeps color lasting up to 75 uses before it fades,” says Amanda Kimball, Sexy Hair platform artist. It’s also made up of almond and rose oil, which hydrates the hair and protects the scalp from unwanted inflammation.
“This is an amazing, multi-functional shampoo that protects color from UV rays, thermal damage, and everyday fading,” says celebrity stylist Graham Nation of Ken Paves Salon. It’s also full of moisture, leaving the hair feeling hydrated and beautiful.
“Arizona loves summer blondes, but with heat, chlorine, and hard water, it can be a challenge,” says colorist Michelle Zeller Porumb of Mane Ivy Salon in Peoria, Arizona. “Mane chicks love UNITE BLONDA™ Daily Shampoo for color protection on no-tone days, and BLONDA™ Toning Shampoo to keep blonde color cool during all those harsh summer days.”
“The Kevin Murphy Angel Wash is a great color-safe shampoo that will keep your hair super hydrated,” says Denise Lavino, senior colorist at James Joseph Salon in Lynnfield, Massachusetts. “Most shampoos have a tendency to dry out your hair, so the fact that this product moisturizes and volumizes is great.”
“I love this shampoo because it’s balanced with strength-building ingredients as well as essential fatty acids to give colored hair the most lightweight and shiny brilliance,” says colorist Sam LaBella.
“This shampoo is a top pick for me because it is sulfate-free and paraben-free,” says Krystel Cuadra, colorist at Frederic Fekkai Salon. “It also contains a special color-enhancing complex, which makes hair color appear more vibrant.”
“This shampoo has a low pH formula and it’s paraben-free so it doesn’t strip color whatsoever,” says master colorist Stephanie Brown.
