Online dating can be scary, and even dangerous sometimes. I myself like to air on the side of caution in most situations, so I was pretty excited when I stumbled across an app that helped take my vetting process one step further. The app in question is called Stud or Dud, and it is nothing short of a game changer.

At last, a free app to conduct a background check! I first downloaded it thinking I would use it to check out a potential date, and thought I would soon delete it. As someone who likes to keep their apps below 50, trimming the fat involves deleting apps after trying them for a few days….but Stud or Dud is astonishing.

I tested it out by looking up my friend’s boyfriend. I typed in his first and last name, nothing else, and when I pressed the “spill it” icon I was shocked. The app gave me his address, apartment number, middle name, the names of his parents, and the town he was born in. Wait, there’s more.

I also saw his marital status, the first six digits of his cell phone number, criminal records (not a sex offender, phew!), property records like home ownership and evictions, court records, bankruptcies, professional records, professional licenses, and more. My jaw quite literally dropped.

How did the app give me so much information? How was this legal? The app generates the information by looking through many data points, including addresses, relatives, and names. The app sources public records from publicly available data to help you learn more about the people are you and stay safe.

You can search someone by name, number, city, or email address. The more information you provide, the more precise the results are likely to be. Needless to say, I went on to search my ex-boyfriends, my friend’s ex-boyfriends, and, if I’m being honest, random people I’ve met who I thought might have a criminal record.

Then, I searched myself, naturally. All the info on me was there, except the app had my address listed from college (not where I currently reside).

If you’re like me, and will only go on a date with someone you met on an app after looking up their Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, googling them, and asking mutual friends for more information, this app is a must have. Plus, it’s free.

Yeah, maybe Facebook can show me if we both have similar taste in music of TV based on our likes, but Stud or Dud can tell me if they have a criminal past, or if they’ve been/are married. Finally…an app that really promotes and allows transparency and safety when online dating.

I could also scroll through my contacts while using the app and do my homework on everyone I know…

The app is like a gift that keeps on giving. Say goodbye sexual predators and awkward text responses to a number you forgot to save!
