With popular stores like Free People, H&M, and ASOS making their mark in the ethical fashion movement, more retailers have been taking steps toward more eco-friendly alternatives – one being vegan leather.

“I think that what we’re seeing is the perfect ethical storm,” says Caroline Francis, founder of luxury vegan retailer VOKE. “Feminists, environmentalists, animal rights activists, health activists, and economists are recognizing the livestock industry as a common thread in the causes they’re fighting for.”

As Francis points out, a 2018 study found the non-animal leather footprint to be only one-third of its animal-derived counterpart. With the connection made between vegan fashion and environmental sustainability, there’s been a spike in eco-conscious millennials seeking vegan alternatives. The bottom line is, faux leather, faux fur, and sustainable everything are refreshingly on trend.
