False lashes, translucent powders, leave-in conditioners – are you using these beauty products correctly?
We asked the experts to bust the most common beauty misconceptions.
Leave-in conditioner
Myth: Leave-in conditioner is only meant for thick, coarse hair and will weigh your hair down.
Truth: “Leave-in conditioner is important for all hair types to provide heat protection and hydrate ends. [The OUAI Leave In Conditioner] is super lightweight, so you don’t have to worry about hair looking like it has extra product in it,” according to Hannah Beals, director of marketing at OUAI. This product works triple duty to detangle, hydrate, and protect all hair types.
Tip: Towel dry wet hair, then spray from roots to tips and brush through.
Sleeping masks
Myth: Night masks and night creams do the same thing.
Truth: “Standard night creams are supplementary to our daily skin care routine,” says Lena Korres, co-founder of KORRES. “[But the] KORRES Wild Rose Vitamin C Brightening Sleeping Facial is so much more than a night cream. It’s a weightless soufflé mask that melts instantly into the skin and continues to work through the night.” It utilizes vitamin C, turmeric extract, and hyaluronic acid to hydrate and brighten the skin.
Tip: Never skip cleansing before applying a sleeping facial.
Translucent powder
Myth: Makeup looks cakey or messy with translucent powder.
Truth: “[Translucent powder] can be smoothed over concealer for a crease-free finish, packed onto the under-eye area to ‘bake,’ or swept over desired areas for a soft-focus complexion,” says Charlotte Knight, founder of Ciaté London. The Ciaté London Extraordinary Translucent Setting Powder, in particular, is finely milled for a soft-focus finish and is suitable for all skin tones.
Tip: “Deposit a [small amount] of the product into the lid, swirl your brush around the powder, tap off the excess, and sweep over the skin with a light hand,” notes Knight.
Eye gel
Myth: Eye gels and eye creams do the same thing.
Truth: “Most light eye gels are lightweight eye creams [that are] used for hydration. However, the dr. brandt skincare needles no more® NO MORE BAGGAGE™ eye de-puffing gel isn’t meant to hydrate – it provides a tightening effect and smooths [the under-eye contour to reduce the appearance of under-eye bags and dark circles],” notes Diana Lendzion, education director of dr. brandt skincare. Oh, and don’t be alarmed by the salmon shade! This formula actually helps color correct dark circles.
Tip: “It’s an eye de-puffing gel, not an eye cream, so make sure to layer it over your eye cream once it’s absorbed. The best time to use this product is after your eye cream has absorbed and before applying concealer,” says Lendzion.
