Sitting hunched at a desk and staring at a computer all day does nothing for a good calorie burn (or the future of your posture for that matter).
However, there are small ways to incorporate movement into your workday to not only burn calories but to also uplift your mood and productivity.
Read on for tips and tricks on how to up your calorie burn at work.
Set a timer
It’s easy to get so consumed with emails and tasks that you forget to take a breather — let alone get out of your chair. Set a timer or download an app like Stand Up! The Work Break Timer to remind yourself to stretch or go on a walk for at least 20 minutes to help release any tension.
Take standing phone meetings
If you can, take your phone on a walk in the hallway or outside while you chat. Not only will walking increase your calorie burn, but it will also boost your mood. According to a study published in the Archives of Internal Medicine, depression sufferers who took a daily walk showed just as much improvement in their symptoms as people on medication.
Use your desk
Make the most of your desk by doing standing pushups or tricep dips. Simply face your desk and send your legs straight behind you, with your feet hip-width apart. Then press against your desk for at least 10 pushups and turn the other way for tricep dips. Dip your back close to the desk as you shoot your elbows straight back to target the triceps.
Chair squats
When in doubt, squat it out! Squats don’t require a lot of space, so it’s easy to do right at your desk. Drive your heels into the ground, squeezing your belly into your spine for a tight core, then lift up to a standing position. Slowly lower back down and repeat at least 10 times.
