We get it — it’s easy to forget when you last replaced your toothbrush or razor, but trust us when we say that you want to stop procrastinating. When you keep items you use every day for too long, it can lead to bacteria build-up, infections, and more.

Ahead, we break down how often you should be replacing your most-used bathroom essentials.

Toss your toothbrush
You should be replacing your toothbrush every three to four months in order to maintain those pearly whites and take better care of your gums. Brushing twice a day with an old toothbrush can cause unnecessary bacterial growth (ew!), so get rid of that thing in a timely manner.

Goodbye, hairbrush
Bet you didn’t realize this bathroom essential needed to be replaced every six months to a year. The build-up of dead hair and dried product between the bristles of your brush (no matter how often you clean it) can cause bacteria to spread and breakage to your luscious locks. You’ll know it’s time to buy a new one when the bristles begin to separate.

Leave your loofah
While you might think the poofy scrubber is keeping you clean, it’s actually the perfect environment for bacteria and yeast to grow. Instead of replacing your loofah every three to four weeks, we recommend using Spongellé’s Body Contouring Buffer. This shower gem has a built-in cleanser that exfoliates and detoxifies the skin and lasts up to 30 washes. Not to mention, it smells amazing!

Get rid of your razor
We’ve all been guilty of holding onto a disposable razor for longer than we should. Skip the hassle of having to go over the same spot three times just to get it smooth and avoiding further skin irritation by replacing your razor every five to seven shaves. We know, that seems like a lot, but is the itchy razor burn really worth trying to salvage every last use of your overused razor?

Makeup no more
You know that mascara and eyeshadow palette you’ve been hoarding for years? Yeah, it’s time to throw that out. Keeping any cosmetic item for too long can cause infections, specifically makeup used around your eyes.
