The 61st Annual Grammy Awards took place Sunday night at the Staples Center in Los Angeles to reward the biggest names in music – and, of course, an award show dedicated to music was sure to have killer performances and heartfelt acceptance speeches.

Outstanding Opening Performance

Havana singer Camilla Cabello opened the Grammy Awards with a theatrical performance full of color and an extravagant stage set. Cabello was joined on stage by J Balvin, Young Thug, and, to the audience’s delight, Latino pop superstar Ricky Martin. This performance set a fun and vibrant tone for the rest of the night’s show.

Cardi B Makes History

The hip-hop singer became the first female rapper to take home the award for Best Rap Album as a solo artist for her Invasion of Privacy debut. Her speech was sprinkled with typical Cardi B humor as she thanked her seven-month-old daughter Kulture and husband Offset.

Dolly Parton Tribute

Katy Perry, Kacey Musgraves, Little Big Town, Maren Morris, and Miley Cyrus joined the eight-time Grammy winner on stage to pay tribute to her songwriting career.  The country music legend then went on to accept the much-deserved Person of the Year Award.

Michelle Obama’s Surprise Appearance

Former First Lady shocked the crowd when she joined Grammy host Alicia Keys on stage to open the show along with Lady Gaga, Jada Smith, and Jennifer Lopez. “Whether we like country, rap, or rock, music helps us share ourselves,” she said. “Our dignity and sorrows, our hopes and joys – it allows us to hear one another.”

Aretha Franklin Tribute

Andra Day, Fantasia, and Yolanda Adams paid tribute to the late soul singer Aretha Franklin with a tear-jerking rendition of one of Franklin’s most legendary songs, (You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Women.
