With every plank, lunge, and yes — even shake, your body will change as you challenge yourself in a class by The Barre Code. But beyond the transformation in your body, you will find a shift in your life that makes you a better person.
Recognizing a need in the market for a space in which women could feel strong, empowered, and motivated, fitness experts Jillian Lorenz and Ariana Chernin founded The Barre Code in Chicago, Illinois in 2010. By focusing on not only the physical benefits of working out, but mental and spiritual growth as well — the duo created a new kind of fitness community that is still growing thanks in large part to its dedicated following and franchising program, which has allowed women to transform into their strongest, fittest selves all over the country. (And in the case of some, their own boss!)
Want to try it out? We’ve partnered with The Barre Code to bring you some of their workouts built on cardio, strength, and restoration on FabFitFunTV (sign up today if you’re not a member yet!). Read on to learn more about the empowering workout right from the founders.
What makes your workout method unique?
What we do at The Barre Code is unique because rather than focusing on exercising, we use fitness as a tool to improve the quality of our clients’ lives. Through exercise, we build strength, increase mobility, gain confidence, release stress, raise energy levels, and spend time having fun and engaging with other like-minded individuals. We aren’t afraid to evolve. Though our cornerstone is barre, we incorporate the newest and greatest from pilates to traditional strength training, HIIT variations to yoga.
What should a first-timer be prepared for when trying your workout?
Be prepared to feel successful because our workouts are great for every body! We offer modifications and advancements to ensure that it never gets easy, but you can always scale to your personal 100%.
What’s one thing you hope clients take away from your workouts?
Empowerment. We want clients to feel strong, confident, and ready to take on every challenge they face outside the workout with positivity and power.
What’s your favorite part of helping people get into shape?
That moment when they realize that anything is possible and that fitness is about a lot more than washboard abs or calories burned. It makes you a better, healthier, and happier person. And to see that light bulb go off, to see the swell in confidence and strength, and to see how it starts to positively affect the lives of those around our clients — that’s the magic. When getting in shape becomes more than a quick fix or a small goal, but a way of life.
Any client success stories?
Our biggest success story is the fact that, through our positive and empowering program, so many women across the country have realized their ultimate dream of being their own boss and have opened up their own Barre Code studios. The fact that we get to continue to spread our message across new markets through our clients-turned-owners is the most inspiring thing of all!
How do you motivate yourself to work out when you’re not in the mood?
Motivation is temporary — the most effective motivation is discipline and dedication. That means showing up even on days when you can only give 50%. When it becomes a habit, when you make it a necessity, there’s no need for motivation or the right mood – you do it because it makes you better and it’s important to you.
