Hair shedding happens to the best of us (clogged shower drain, anyone?), but you’ve probably wondered exactly what it means. Why does it happen? And how much hair shedding is too much?

Well, we’ve got the 411 on everything you need to know about hair shedding and the best tips for preventing it.

Why does our hair shed?
Hair shedding is totally normal and it happens to everyone. Our hair basically goes through stages of life, shedding being the last stage. Your strands shrink, detach from the scalp, then go through a period of rest, when it eventually sheds. The process of hair growth then starts all over again.

But how much is too much?
The normal amount of strands shed per day is between 50 and 100, depending on the person. Anything more than 100 strands per day can be caused by an onset of stress, childbirth, or excessive weight loss in a short period of time. It can also be a sign of early hair loss depending on genetics. If you’ve had any significant and stressful life changes recently, know that it generally takes six to nine months for your hair to get back to its normal cycle.

So how do you prevent it?
Tight hairstyles, such as ponytails, and products with harsh chemicals can cause excessive shedding as well as a buildup of extra dandruff, so avoid these as much as possible. Eating a balanced diet can also keep the shedding at bay. Get your daily dose of vegetables and protein to help your locks and scalp balance a healthy amount of nutrients. Lastly, getting a proper night’s rest will help your body maintain itself and reduce excessive hair shedding. Basically, it’s all about taking care of yourself from the inside out!
