When getting a phenomenal blowout a few weeks back at Yves Durif Salon at The Carlyle, we learned an awesome new hair washing technique from Yves Durif, the master himself. Basically, it involves a small four ounce applicator bottle, shampoo, conditioner, and a stellar comb — which we’ll get to later!

Why is it a better way to shampoo, you ask? For starters, you’ll waste less product. But most importantly, you’ll put focus on the roots and scalp vs. your lengths and ends, focusing on the parts that need TLC the most.

So check out his expert tips below and lather up (the right way!):

Applicator

1. Mix and Apply
Pre-fill your applicator bottle with half shampoo and half water. Wet your hair and apply the mixture to your scalp, section by section. In a nutshell, Durif explains that this method helps to keep the shampoo at the roots vs. going down the drain.

2. Massage
Massage the shampoo mixture thoroughly into the roots of your hair, paying close attention to spots around the temples, behind the ears, and so on.

3. Always Use a Comb
Using a comb (and we highly suggest The Yves Durif Comb), gently comb hair from the roots to the ends to bring the shampoo through the length of your hair. (This will clean the ends sans abrasion.) Durif also suggests continuing to comb the hair while rinsing.

4. Condition the Lengths and Ends
Apply a walnut size amount of conditioner only — repeat — walnut size only — to your hair, avoiding the roots and focusing on the lengths and ends. Comb to evenly distribute, and continue to comb while rinsing out.

5. Rinse with Cold Water
Complete the process with a cold-water rinse to close the hair cuticles, and voila — clean, healthy, and gorgeous locks await!
