Urban Outfitters is normally under fire for selling controversial tees and beauty products, but this time it’s for discrimination.
One disappointed customer wasn’t permitted to use the women’s dressing room in one of Urban’s Los Angeles stores. Nicholas Gorham, who identifies as gender fluid, penned an essay for Mic in response to the transphobic experience.
When we got to the dressing rooms, Tamara, a cis woman, was taken in and given a room before the attendant began leading me to a completely different area to change.
The Urban Outfitters employee sensed the tension and explained that it was because “there are young girls over there.” Gorham told Refinery29 that he was “appalled and belittled.”
Gorham tweeted about the incident and Urban Outfitters responded back with a statement.
OK Urban Outfitters, good to know! pic.twitter.com/DkC9MPJght
