SPONSORED BY SINGAPORE TOURISM BOARD

There aren’t many travel destinations quite like Singapore. The multi-dimensional city is rich in foodie hotspots, incredible views, culturally diverse scenes, and more to attract both tourists and locals alike. Trust us, whatever your passions are, the city-state has something for you (and perhaps will help you discover a few new passions, too!).

Not sure where to start? Check out five of our favorite unconventional Singapore spots below.

For the culturally curious…discover Peranakan culture

Discover the meaning of “east meets west” by embracing the Peranakan culture (descendants of Chinese traders and local Southeast Asian women). Visit The Intan, located along Joo Chiat Terrace, and tour the shophouse residence of collector Alvin Yapp. “With a deep love for all things Peranakan, I have devoted my home to be a haven for the treasures of the Peranakan Culture,” says Yapp. As a lover of all things culturally rich, you’ll get to learn about the history, traditions, and lifestyle of the Peranakans.

For the foodie…tour Hawker centers

If food is the epicenter of all of your travel plans, you’re in luck because Singapore has no shortage of foodie-approved spots. Stop by various hawker centers (aka open air food courts) like the Old Airport Road Food Centre, Maxwell Road Food Centre, or the Tiong Bahru Food Market for a medley of cuisines and specialties. You’ll feel like a local chowing down on Hainanese chicken rice, nasi lemak (fragrant rice cooked with coconut milk and pandan leaf, typically served with fried chicken), and laksa. Plus, where else can you enjoy authentic cuisines all in one place?

For the collector…shop all the hidden gems

Souvenirs for days! Shop unique knick-knacks in Bugis and Kampong Glam. You’ll find an eclectic mix of goodies that may even spark a new hobby or interest. We recommend Keepers at the National Design Centre to sample selected local brands, Supermama for a wide selection of souvenirs and household items that embody Singapore’s culture, and Sifr Aromatics for customized handmade fragrances (without the use of alcohol!).

For the explorer…venture the Southern Ridges

Take a breather and take in Singapore’s lush greenery — it’s truly breathtaking! Visit the Southern Ridges, a 10-kilometer stretch of trails spanning the hills of some of Singapore’s most popular parks and gardens. It’s made up of Mount Faber Park, Telok Blangah Hill Park, Hort Park, Kent Ridge Park, and Labrador Nature Reserve, so there’s more than enough to keep your wanderlust heart happy. But if that still isn’t enough, just think of how many ‘gram-worthy shots you’ll get out of your visit.

For the socializer…bar hop at the edge of Chinatown

Indulge your kindred spirit and immerse yourself in the vibrant, social side of Singapore by bar hopping at the edge of Chinatown. Singapore has some of the best and most unique bars around. Swing by Jigger & Pony for craft cocktails, Operation Dagger for the rum and salted egg yolk cocktail, and Tippling Club for its experimental selection (like a gummy bear menu!).
