For this exclusive interview, FabFitFun’s Senior Buyer of Skincare + Bath & Body, Teagan is joined by the visionary behind it all: Elaine Binder, Founder and CEO of Spongellé.

The Visionary Behind the Brand & Spongellé’s Genesis

Elaine, it’s truly inspiring to see a strong, smart woman like yourself not only in a leadership role but as the founder and CEO of a thriving brand. What does that mean to you personally, and how important is fostering relationships with other women-founded companies, like ours here at FFF with Katie Kitchens, to you and Spongellé?

Thank you – that means so much! As a woman founder and CEO, it’s incredibly meaningful to lead a brand like Spongellé that reflects both creativity and resilience. Personally, it’s a point of pride, but also a responsibility to continue pushing boundaries and creating opportunities for others. Building relationships with other women-founded companies, like FabFitFun founder Katie Kitchens, is not just important – it’s essential. When we support and uplift each other, we strengthen our collective impact. Collaboration over competition is how we all grow, and I deeply value the sense of community and shared purpose among women entrepreneurs.

 

Can you please talk to us a bit about how Spongellé came to be?

Spongellé was inspired by a personal moment at home. My youngest son, Daniel, used to go through body wash like water using almost a quarter of the bottle in a single shower. We found ourselves constantly restocking, and it got me thinking: why isn’t there a more efficient way to use body wash that also reduces waste? I couldn’t find anything like it on the market, so I set out to create it. That’s how Spongellé was born – a personal care brand built around a unique delivery system that infuses the perfect amount of body wash into each buffer. Our products are designed to cleanse, exfoliate, massage, and nourish the skin while minimizing plastic waste and overconsumption.

 

Spongellé proudly manufactures in the US. Why has maintaining US manufacturing been so important to you and the brand since 2003, and what advantages does it offer in terms of quality, innovation, and even responsiveness to consumer needs?

Maintaining U.S. manufacturing has been a core value for Spongellé since the very beginning. It allows us to have complete control over the quality, safety, and consistency of every product we create. By manufacturing locally in Los Angeles, we’re able to innovate quickly, respond to trends in real time, and customize offerings based on what our customers are asking for. It also allows us to work closely with our team and uphold high standards throughout every step of the process from formulation to final packaging. Supporting U.S. manufacturing means supporting local jobs, ethical labor practices, and a more sustainable supply chain which defines who we are as a brand.

That commitment was tested nearly 25 years ago, when we were offered the opportunity to manufacture our products in China and we said no. We even visited the largest soap supplier at the time in China, who was producing for Walmart USA, and challenged them to replicate our concept. A year later, they still couldn’t do it. That’s when we knew we had created something truly unique and that it could only be made in the USA.

Seriously, what’s the secret sauce? Our members go absolutely wild for Spongellé products! What do you think makes them so addictive and keeps people coming back for more?

The secret sauce is simple: convenience, high-quality ingredients, and unique fragrances. Spongellé transforms an everyday routine into a luxurious experience. With extended-release lather and no bacteria buildup like traditional loofahs, they’re as practical as they are indulgent. Plus, they’re made locally in Los Angeles with custom-blended fragrances and skin-loving ingredients, making them perfect for both daily use and travel. Once people try them, they realize there’s really nothing else like it!

 

You’ve talked about “Beyond Cleansing” as your trademarked tagline. What does that phrase truly embody for Spongellé, and what kind of overall experience, both sensory and practical, do you want users to have when they incorporate your products into their daily routines?

Beyond Cleansing is more than just a tagline. We want to elevate your entire shower or bath experience into something that feels luxurious, effective, and thoughtful. From the moment you open the packaging, you’re met with custom-blended fragrances that transport you, where the Body Wash Infused Buffer delivers a rich creamy lather, our moisturizers lock in hydration, and our award-winning diffusers and candles extend your favorite fragrance after you step out. We want every product of Spongellé to feel like a little escape – an upgrade to your daily routine that truly goes beyond cleansing.

 

We know you’re passionate about fragrance, even studying perfumery in Grasse, France! Can you talk to us a bit about that experience?

I have always been amused by fragrance. Even as a child, I could detect individual notes before I understood what that meant. Watching the film Perfume later in life had a profound and lasting impact on me, and it deepened my desire to explore the art of scent. When Spongellé was born, I knew I wanted to go beyond curiosity and formally study perfumery. That journey took me to Grasse, France – the heart of fragrance where I immersed myself in learning, creating, and refining the craft that continues to inspire everything we do at Spongellé.

 

Evolving and Innovating

 In the beauty space, we know evolution and trends are everything. How do you continue to identify and lean into what makes Spongellé so resilient and appealing to consumers, especially with evolving trends in ingredients, sustainability, and personal care routines?

We’re always listening to customer feedback, shifts in lifestyle, and what’s trending in personal care and wellness. Innovation is at the core of our brand, whether that’s through introducing new technology in our manufacturing process, enhancing design aesthetics while maintaining sustainability in our packaging, or creating new product lines with highly researched ingredients without sacrificing quality. Our ability to evolve while staying true to our mission of Beyond Cleansing is what keeps Spongellé resilient and deeply loved.

 

Given your belief in multi-use and multi-functionality, how do you see the beauty industry evolving in terms of product offerings, and how is Spongellé positioned to continue leading in that space with its innovative delivery systems?

Spongellé was built on the idea of multi-functionality long before it became a trend, and that’s what makes us a true category creator in the beauty and bath space. Speaking of unique, your first branded collaboration with Harry Potter last year was so cool and a huge hit with our members! Can Spongellé fans expect to see more exciting branded or licensed collaborations in the future? Any hints you can share with our community?
