500 Days of Summer

Good movies are worth watching. Great movies are worth watching twice. And one genre we always find ourselves going back to is the one that make us cry, “aww,” and ugly laugh all at the same time.

Here are 10 of our favorite rom-coms that are definitely worth the Saturday night in.

“When Harry Met Sally” (1989)
This one is an oldie but a goodie. Meg Ryan and Billy Crystal perfectly demonstrate the challenges and woes of falling in love with your best friend.

“Sleepless in Seattle” (1993)
Rom-com power couple, Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan pair up in this early ’90s hit. The two develop a powerful on-screen romance through radio and letters — and don’t even get us started on the scene when they finally meet in person.

“You’ve Got Mail” (1998)
“You’ve Got Mail” not only completes the Meg Ryan trifecta, but it was also the first online relationship (eat your heart out, Tinder). The two in-person enemies develop a relationship online where they let their true personalities show.

“10 Things I Hate About You” (1999)
“10 Things I Hate About You” is the often mocked, rarely replicated adaptation of Shakespeare’s “The Taming of the Shrew.” Young Heath Ledger, Julia Stiles, and Joseph Gordon-Levitt masterfully took the old English play and transformed it into a cinematic icon.

“Love Actually” (2003)
The sequel, “Red Nose Day Actually,” came out earlier this year, but Love Actually was one of the frontrunners of using multiple, connected plotlines. It may not be Christmas time, but it’s always the season for this movie.

“How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days” (2003)
Before he became an award-winning drama actor, Matthew McConaughey filmed a classic rom-com with Kate Hudson. The two are on opposite sides of a bet where Ben (McConaughey) is trying to make Andie (Hudson) fall in love, while she is trying to break his heart.

“13 Going on 30” (2004)
When this movie aired, we were teens, and now we’re going on 30. So yeah, we’re pretty much this movie. “13 Going on 30” is definitely worth watching just to see how this movie stacks up to our reality.

“500 Days of Summer” (2009)
A cult classic, “500 Days of Summer” was one of the movies that sparked widespread attention among indie flicks and for good reason. Eight years later and the story and production of this movie are still just as fresh and innovative.

“Crazy, Stupid, Love” (2011)
Ryan Gosling, Steve Carell, and Emma Stone — need we say more? If you’ve never seen “Crazy, Stupid, Love,” you should. If you’ve already seen it, you should see it again.

“Ruby Sparks” (2012)
Equal parts romance, comedy, and sci-fi, “Ruby Sparks” tells the tale of Calvin (Paul Dano), a young novelist who’s fictional character, Ruby, comes to life. As romance ensues, things get a little complicated.
