Slut-shaming dress codes need to stop.

Catherine Manning, whose daughter is a student at Kambrya College, shared her thoughts on slut-shaming dress codes in a Facebook post which has since gone viral. Kambrya College was one of 70 Australian schools that was targeted by a website that shared thousands of stolen sexual images of teenage girls. The website reached out to boys at Kambrya College and they began to send photos, too.

After the incident, Kambrya College called two separate assemblies: One for male students and one for female students. As noted in Manning’s post, the girls were “told [they] had to check the length of their skirts” and that “boys are distracted by their legs, and that boys don’t respect girls who wear short skirts.”

As a result, the female students felt even more sexualized and uncomfortable around the school faculty and other students.

They feel judged and victimised by school staff, like all eyes are on them, and they don’t feel comfortable around their male peers. They feel their school has sexualised and demonised them, and compounded the problem by sending a strong message that it is them, the girls, who are responsible for the boys’ behaviour, and that the boys are the victims here.

Since the post has gone viral, Manning has had a conversation with the school’s principal and shared that the school is committed to moving forward with the issue in a positive and respectful manner.
