How to Prevent Hair Damage Before It Happens

WINTER 2019 BOX PARTNER

Whether you like to process your hair or your love for heat-styling tools runs deep, your strands are eventually going to reveal these not so good habits. So before you start to notice constantly parched, frizzy, and lifeless strands, it’s time to take action.

Straight from the experts, here are four things you should do to prevent damage and keep your hair healthy.

Scalp massage
Healthy hair begins with a healthy scalp, and that requires a proper routine. Celebrity stylist Fuat Célik, recommends “massaging your scalp because it brings blood flow to the area.” This is necessary to remove dead skin cells that linger and contribute to flakiness and lifeless hair.

Shower routine
Washing your hair with hot water feels amazing after a long workout or an especially draining workday, but it can cause serious damage as hot temperatures open up the cuticle and strip the oils from your hair. “Shampooing helps remove build-up and environmental pollution, which can even contribute to hair loss,” says Michelle Blaisure, Bosley Professional Strength certified trichologist and product and technical specialist. If you wash your hair every day, try switching to two or three times a week and look for a formula like R+Co TELEVISION Perfect Hair Shampoo + Conditioner, which contains juniper berry extract and other ingredients to detoxify and promote shiny, healthy hair.

Use the right tools
“The biggest culprit of breakage is hot tools. Eliut Rivera, NYC hairstylist of Eliut Salon suggests using “a blow-dry primer to protect the hair.” A primer like Drybar Prep Rally Prime & Prep Detangler will coat strands in biotin and a vitamin-rich formula to protect against heat damage and restore moisture levels. To give your hair a break from heat damage, “let hair air dry 90% before finishing with a curler or straightener,” he states.

Avoid alcohol
When adding finishing products, make sure to steer clear of products containing alcohol. “Over time, products with alcohol really dry out the hair and lead to breakage,” says Faith, a stylist at Oscar Blandi Salon. So if you see it listed as an ingredient on the back of a bottle, put it back on the shelf.
