Good skin doesn’t start with the number of expensive serums and retinol you have in your cabinet. Rather, it starts with how you treat your mind, body, and soul.

“Skin care is health care. When you take care of your skin, you’re taking care of your overall health,” says Dr. Murad, a board-certified dermatologist and founder of Murad. Ahead, Dr. Murad shares tips on how to love and nourish the skin you’re in.

Look beyond good products
Your expensive skin care products won’t be as effective if you’re not treating your actual body with care. “Skin is affected by what we eat, how well we sleep, how we manage stress, and how much we exercise. It’s all connected,” says Dr. Murad. “A robust skin care routine is wonderful, but it needs the support of nutrients and hydration from food, oxygenated blood from exercise, and reduced cortisol from better stress management.”

Do things that make you happy
Loving and appreciating your skin begins with finding happiness within yourself first. The skin is the body’s window to wellness, so if you’re happy, it shows on your skin too. “If the body isn’t well because of the effects of stress, it can show on the skin as breakouts, inflammation, dark under-eye circles and puffiness, expression lines or frown lines, and dullness and dehydration.” Dr. Murad advises eating (yes, eating!) your water in the form of fruits and veggies, being kind to your mind, nourishing your skin, and awakening the body. “I call them the ‘Four Pillars of Wellness,’ and they’re different for everyone. Find healthy ways of living that make you happy, and it will be easier to stick with them.”

Take preventative measures
Just as you stay ahead of your overall health with regular exercise or supplements, it’s important to stay ahead of your skin’s health as well. Collagen is one ingredient Dr. Murad recommends incorporating early on into your skin care routine.“Without collagen, we couldn’t exist. Collagen makes up our tendons and ligaments as well as the dermis of our skin. The Murad Rapid Collagen Infusion has the benefits of a filler-like plumping effect without an injection. And it works fast – plumper skin with fewer lines shows in little as two hours.”

Embrace the aging process
It’s important to remind yourself that aging is a natural part of life and everybody goes through it. “[Understand] that you do have control over how well your skin ages. Yes, you’re going to get wrinkles as you age. But if you’re not sleeping well, chronically stressed, and not eating a balanced diet, your chances of lines, wrinkles, and skin issues increase.”
