Fall is in the air and we can practically smell the Pumpkin Spice Lattes on the horizon. Some of our favorite fall things? Changing leaves, Halloween, and new scarves!

A scarf is the accessory you should always have on hand this season. We’re especially obsessed with blanket scarves (the ModCloth Loch and Key scarf is our personal favorite) because it’s an extra barrier against the cold. But how do you keep your favorite scarf clean when it matches every sweater in your closet?

We’ve got you covered with our tips below.

Viscose or Wool Scarf
1. Hand wash in cold water with a gentle detergent. Create suds by kneading the scarf and let soak for up to 15 minutes.
2. Rinse scarf with cold water and remove. Gently wring excess water!
3. Lay flat to dry. Hangers will cause massive stretching, and no one likes that.

Cashmere Scarf
1. Soak scarf in lukewarm water and add a mild detergent (baby shampoo will also do the trick!), and create suds.
2. After about five minutes, remove scarf, and roll into another towel to remove water.
3. Lay flat to dry! Hanging will stretch the scarf.

Silk Scarf
1. Take care of any stains before hand washing. Use a gentle stain remover.
2. Hand wash in cold water with detergent, the more neutral the better (non-alkaline, preferably).
3. Leave to soak for 10-20 minutes.
4. Do not wring or twist dry. Simply lay flat.
5. Steam or iron low (inside out) to remove any wrinkles and get amazing sheen.
