When officers received a report over the weekend about a tent pitched outside of Gordon State College in Barnesville, Georgia, they didn’t expect to see this.
Fred Barely, a biology major at GSC, came to register for his second semester and biked six hours from Conyers in the scorching heat. He traveled with just a tent, a few belongings, water, and a box of cereal. He set up his tent until the dorms opened in August so he could search for a job.
The officers were so moved by his story and paid for Barely’s stay at a motel for two nights.
One of the officer’s wives posted the story on a community Facebook page and the motel owner and a local resident, Casey Blaney, paid for the rest of the student’s stay at the motel until he could move in early to the dorms today. Barely also has a job at a local pizza joint and has been given gifts from strangers, including a new bike, clothes, and school supplies.
Additionally, Casey started a Success for Fred Facebook page and a GoFundMe page for Fred, which has already raised more than $185,000.
