Sadly, the first uterus transplant in the US has failed.

Uterus transplants are a relatively new procedure, and the only successful surgery was performed in Sweden last year. The recipient, Lindsay, faced complications that forced the transplant to be removed. The initial procedure was performed in Cleveland on February 25 and was the first of its kind in the US. While the surgery wasn’t a success, Lindsay released this statement:

“I just wanted to take a moment to express my gratitude towards all of my doctors. They acted very quickly to ensure my health and safety. Unfortunately I did lose the uterus to complications. However, I am doing okay and appreciate all of your prayers and good thoughts.”

The hope is that uterus transplants can help women who wouldn’t normally be able to have children, become pregnant and conceive.
