Yams and sweet potatoes are often mixed up, but they’re actually completely different vegetables. So the next time you’re grabbing your weekly groceries, here’s how to tell the difference between the two.
Texture
A yam’s skin is bumpy and rough with a blackish or brown color that almost resembles tree bark, and a sweet potato often has a smooth texture and is a reddish-brown color.
Shape and flesh
Yams are shaped like cylinders, and when you cut into a yam, the flesh may be white or purple. Sweet potatoes are long and tapered at the ends and come in a variety of colors: white, yellow, red, purple, or brown. When you cut into the sweet potato, you may find a white, yellow, red, purple, or orange-ish color.
Taste
Yams are less sweet and much more starchy compared to sweet potatoes.
Cost
Yams can cost as little as 79 cents per pound, and the more trendy sweet potatoes can cost around $2.49 per pound.
