Although summer has rewarded us with amazing styling opportunities, the cool fall air is quickly approaching, making it a great time to reevaluate what’s inside your closet. While revamping your wardrobe may seem like a difficult (and not to mention tedious) task, New York-based wardrobe stylist Samantha Brown suggests that it can actually be quite easy to do.
To help make those necessary updates to your closet, we asked Brown what you’ll want to toss or keep. From shoes to sundresses, here is how to properly prep your closet for fall.
Toss items with visible wear
“Toss any items that show visible wear and tear from the summer,” Brown says. Anything with sunscreen stains, tears, or damage from constant exposure to the hot weather should be purged before fall begins, she advises.
Keep your sundresses
Although you may not be exposing as much skin in the fall, Brown recommends keeping those cute sundresses nearby, as you can easily pair them with tights, boots, and a leather jacket to transition them into the cooler months.
Don’t put away your crop tops just yet
“Crop tops look great when layered over a thin turtleneck or button-down,” Brown says. “This helps give them life in a new season.”
Evaluate your shoe collection
Brown also recommends taking a look at your shoe collection as summer draws to a close because the wear and tear of the summer season can leave your sandals or sneakers damaged beyond repair. “Cast away anything that’s been overly beat up on your summer vacations,” Brown explains. “If they are beyond a sprucing from your shoemaker, it’s time for them to go.”
Don’t be afraid to go through your closet
The end of a season always provides a great opportunity to make those hard decisions, Brown suggests. So if you didn’t wear something all summer, ask yourself why. “If the piece is no longer working for you, add it to the donation pile,” she advises. “You’ll end up with more closet space, and someone else may be able to enjoy it.”
